Nearly two years after their Las Vegas elopement, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck called it quits.
While this may seem like a short marriage, it lasted slightly longer than their dating phaseâ¦depending on how you look at it. Twenty years after ending their original engagement in 2004, Lopez and Affleck reunited in April 2021, tying the knot just a little over a year later. As one source recently told People, the former couple “really loved each otherâand it happened quickly.”
The source continued, “They were really going to give it a try, and they did. These are two people who are in love with love, and who wouldn’t jump into that? And the world wanted it.”
Whatever issues arose during their marriage, there eventually came a point where Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck stopped trying to make it work. After news broke that Lopez filed for a divorce on August 20âciting their date of separation as April 26âa source told People that Affleck didn’t give Lopez âany signs that he wants to continue their marriage.â
Rumors of a split began circulating back in May, when Lopez was spotted house-hunting in Los Angeles without her husband. At that point, it had been over a month since the pair were photographed together in public and reports quickly came out that Affleck had moved into a rental home in Brentwood.
It remained unclear, however, if the couple was attempting to mend things. While Lopez canceled her world tour to spend time with family, she spent much of the summer in the Hamptons, where she threw herself an extravagant 55th birthday bash despite his absence. On the flip side, Lopez took the time to âstop byâ Affleck’s intimate 52nd birthday celebration a few days prior to filing for divorce.
â[Lopez is] very disappointed and sad, but Ben hasnât given her any signs that he wants to continue their marriage,â the source told People on August 22. âHe hasnât shown any commitment and interest in making their marriage work. Itâs gotten to the point that she just needs to look out for herself.â
