When Katie Holmes sets her sights on a difficult trend, like white ballet flats, anything can happen.
For example, they can become an elegant and sophisticated option as if by magic, fitting right in with the carefree je ne sais quoi apparent in all of Holmes’ looks. Whether it’s mustard jeans that few would dare to wear or stirrup leggings that so many resist, her thing making the most difficult trends feel wearable and desirable to all of us.
On January 4, Katie Holmes went for a shoe that, a priori, we would not consider a basic. It does not seem to us—or at least it did not until we saw her—an especially easy option to combine, but Holmes was willing to accept the challenge. And come out on top, of course.
The shoes in question are white ballet flats, which any little girl could easily pair with a communion dress. The ballerinas are so naive that, on paper, they don’t seem to go together with jeans but the actor made masterful styling choices that change everything. Holmes wore jeans cut above the ankle, playing into the shoes’ childish nature with casually pulled down socks. She then balances out the look with two sophisticated pieces balance out the outfit: the wool coat and the turtleneck sweater. Only Alexa Chung herself could have done it just as well.
And so we have a more special and more formal alternative to loafers and sneakers. They’re sweet, but not too sugary—the same effect Holmes achieved while reinterpreting bowed ballet flats in her own way. This is just the umpteenth example that everything that falls into her hands is likely to become a piece to look at with different eyes.
