American Girl is embedded in so many of my core memories. So when I was invited to attend a preview of American Girl and Posh Peanut’s new collaboration at the iconic toy brand’s Rockefeller Center store this past weekend, it’s hard to say who was more excited, me or my daughter.
Okay, let’s be real, it was totally me.
Standing in the store holding my daughter’s hand, I felt a wave of nostalgia remembering all the happy memories of playing with my dolls (I had Samantha but was totally a Molly), pouring over the catalogues, and reading the stories. And that’s the feeling that Fiona Sahakian, the founder of the children’s clothing brand, wanted to evoke by partnering with American Girl.
“I grew up cherishing my own American Girl dolls, and now seeing my daughter share that same love has deepened my admiration for the brand,” she tells me, adding that the collection feels like a “full-circle moment.”
The American Girl and Posh Peanut collaboration, which launches online on Thursday and is being detailed exclusively in Glamour, contains not just clothing like adorable twirl dresses and cozy PJs, but tableware, towels and blankets, and accessories.
The collection features both illustrations of classic American Girls (like Kirsten, Molly, and Josefina) and dresses and pajamas that hearken back to the characters subtly, like pajamas and dresses in Samantha’s très classique maroon and violet checkered fit.
The clothing is not just for girls—moms can get in on the fun too with matching moments in skirts, shirts, dresses, or pajamas. And don’t worry, they are subtle enough to wear out of the house without actually looking like a literal doll.
Jamie Cygielman, a spokesperson for American Girl and Mattel, tells me that the chance to celebrate the brand through hearkening back to some of its characters’ iconic fits is one of the most exciting aspects of the collaboration with Posh Peanut, which has blown up in popularity among young moms in recent years for its comfortable yet stylish clothing for kids.
